Like a traditional "Brick & Mortar" company that markets and sells goods or services from a building storefront, an ecommerce website is for marketing and selling online. When a customer enters your website, they are walking through your front door.
The customer goes onto the internet and searches for the product s/he wants. As s/he finds it on a specific website, s/he places an order. Once the order is placed, payment must be made. The customer gives the website personal information which is then encrypted. The order moves on to the payment department, where the information is sent to the bank, allowing them to accept the deal. There are a number of differing payment systems, such as paypal, credit card, online banking, etc.
The ecommerce website provides customers with the easy purchasing option of sitting comfortably at home and buying whatever they want with a click.
